Southern Silicones Moves to a New Home!

Particle size strongly impacts emulsion stability, especially when diluted to 30% solids and below.  Most silicone emulsions on the market today have a mean particle size of 250+ nanometers (nm).  SSI E600 (60% solids emulsion of 350 cst silicone fluid) and related emulsions from Southern Silicones have a particle size reliably below 200 nm, as measured by laser diffraction.  Consequently, low solids dilutions of SSI E600 are shelf-stable for very long periods of time.  Use SSI E600 with confidence in tire and vinyl dressings, rubber lubricants, thermoforming release operations, heatset web offset printing conditioners and many other applications.

E600 and related emulsions have a strong blue hue, indicative of very small particle size.

 

The mean particle size of SSI E600 nm is typically 180-190 nm.  For comparison, two competitive samples were analyzed and found to have mean sizes of 340 nm and 310 nm.

Market-Leading Particle Size Control

We are often asked to recommend foam control products for a wide range of applications.  Generally speaking, the applications fall into one of two categories:  in-formula or process aid.

With in-formula cases, the idea is to add the foam control product to a formulation, remain stable for a period of time, then provide foam control when the product is (usually) diluted and used.  Detergents and agrochemical adjuvants fall into this category.  We typically refer to the foam control product as an antifoam in this situation.

With process aids, foam is created by some type of agitation, aeration or other mechanical/chemical action as part of a manufacturing process.  Liquid product bottle filling, potato processing and plastic recycling are examples that fall into this category.  Sometimes it is best to add the foam control product prior to foam formation, i.e., as an antifoam, and sometimes it is best to add the foam control product to handle existing foam, i.e., as a defoamer.

Foam Control Product Selection

Most food grade silicone emulsions on the market today are offered at a solids concentration of about 40%, meaning 60% of the product simply contains water.  To help formulators and processors reduce costs and waste, Southern Silicones has developed a stable, highly concentrated (63% solids) food grade emulsion of 350 cst silicone oil.  SSI 5562-FG is a proven, effective component of water based lubricants, mold release agents and anti-stick products (e.g., for conveyor belts).  E5562-FG is free-flowing, even though the solids concentration is quite high.  The significant solids increase results in reduced freight costs, packaging costs, waste and inventory space. Many water-based, masonry water repellents are formulated with alkoxy-functional silanes and siloxanes.  Although these materials provide excellent water resistance after cure/reaction on the masonry surface, the alkoxy functionality renders them relatively hydrophilic prior to cure completion.  Consequently, water beading performance is often poor during the first few days following application.  SSI 3100 was developed to assist formulators with this challenge.  SSI E3100 is designed to be cold-blended into water-based, masonry water repellents to provide early water beading performance.  SSI 3100 works at low dosage, start evaluations at 1-5%.

To illustrate, 2% of E3100 was added to a conventional water repellent.  The mixture was applied to a masonry paver and allowed to dry for about 12 hours.  The following picture was taken at that point.
